In 1633, a pavilion of white marble rose within Lahore Fort, named Naulakha for the nine lakh rupees it is said to have cost. Nearly four centuries later, the afternoon light still lingers on its stone. Naulakha is made for the same kind of looking. A mint lorus boti silk pishwas with sheer sleeves, gold zardozi and pearls gathered at the neckline, gold buti falling through every kali like light through a jaali, and gold borders at the hem and cuffs. A sheer mint organza dupatta, scattered in gold, completes it. A dress made, like the pavilion, to be looked at slowly.
